Williamsburg has a complex history, with a significant African American population during the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite this, the contributions and experiences of Black residents have often been overlooked in the city's historical narrative. The trail aims to rectify this by incorporating community voices and personal stories into its narrative, focusing on themes such as faith, education, and resilience.
The project has been in development since 2020, with community input sessions held to gather stories and insights from local residents. The Williamsburg City Council approved the trail's narrative in December 2024, following extensive collaboration with community members and historians. The trail will feature signs and markers that highlight important sites, including the Historic First Baptist Church and the Sankofa Bird Statue on the campus of William & Mary.
