Notes

The site of one of America’s oldest churches founded by free and enslaved Blacks may soon be uncovered in Colonial Williamsburg’s latest archaeology project. The excavation will take place near the intersection of Nassau and Francis streets with hopes to unearth the early structure used by members of the Historic First Baptist Church dating back as late as the 19th century. The excavation will start in early September and the first phase is expected to last seven weeks. The first phase has been fully funded through donor support.
