In the late 18th century, African Americans comprised more than 50% of Williamsburg population. There are renewed efforts to tell the story of Williamsburg's black residents. In 2020, the foundations of the First Baptist Church, one of the oldest African-American churches in North America were uncovered. It was formed in the same year as the new nation - 1776.
