The Historic First Baptist Church joined by Bruton Parish celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 6:00 PM. The celebration focused on Dr. King's quote that "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." The speaker for this year's celebration of Dr. King was Christy Coleman, who grew up in First Baptist Church and currently serves as the CEO of the American Civil War Museum, located in Richmond and Appomattox, Virginia. A tireless advocate for the power of museums, narrative disruption and inclusivity, she has been an innovator and leader in the history museum filed. She is one of Time Magazine's 31 People Who are Changing the South.
